Overview

An Inter-Religion Marriage allows two individuals belonging to different religions to marry legally without conversion. This process is governed by the Special Marriage Act, 1954, ensuring a civil marriage registered by the government Marriage Registrar.


Eligibility Criteria

  • The groom must be at least 21 years of age.
  • The bride must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Both parties must be unmarried (or legally divorced/widowed).
  • Both individuals must belong to different religions or choose civil marriage without conversion.
  • Free consent of both parties is mandatory.
  • They must not fall under prohibited degrees of relationship.

The Process (Step-by-Step)

Notice Submission

The couple submits a Notice of Intended Marriage to the Marriage Registrar.

30-Day Public Notice

The notice is displayed for 30 days to invite objections, if any.

Objection Handling

If objections arise, the Marriage Officer investigates and resolves them legally.

Marriage Declaration

Both parties and 3 witnesses sign the declaration before the Registrar.

Marriage Certificate Issued

The official government marriage certificate is issued the same day.
